Funding Part of Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) Program to Enable Commercial Fusion Energy

Citrine Informatics announced today that it has been selected to receive $300,000 in funding from the U.S. Department of Energy Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). The funding is part of the Creating Hardened And Durable fusion first Wall Incorporating Centralized Knowledge (CHADWICK) program, which aims to explore promising alloy design space and manufacturing processes to develop next generation materials to strengthen the fusion power plant’s first wall, which surrounds the fusion core.

“With our contribution to the CHADWICK program, we’ll be utilizing Citrine’s technology to rapidly identify novel alloy chemistries and manufacturing parameters capable of enduring the extreme environments of fusion nuclear reactors in less than a year,” said Dr. James Saal, Director-External Research at Citrine Informatics.

Citrine will be working alongside a team of experts in nuclear fusion reactor and alloy design, including member at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Ames National Laboratory, Baylor University, the University of Michigan, and Iowa State University.

The promise of limitless clean energy from nuclear fusion is limited by the materials technology in the walls of fusion reactors. In the newly funded program, Citrine will develop models to quantitatively predict materials performance and manufacturability in a never-explored alloy class for this application, enabling rapid design from little-to-no data. Citrine’s tools will integrate rapid experimentation, simulations, and the expertise of the program team to develop first-of-their-kind alloy designs. By demonstrating design success in this program, fusion reactors will be closer than ever before to reality.
